William “Clay” Brittain Jr., age 69, of Sanderson, Florida, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022, at the Malcolm Randall V.A. Medical Center in Gainesville. He was born on September 12, 1952, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to Dorothy Ella (Sea) and William Clay Brittain Sr.
Clay moved to Baker County three years ago from Athens, Georgia. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Clay was a PROUD veteran of the United States Navy and had a veritable wealth of knowledge and wisdom. He was one of the greatest track hoe operators in Northeast Florida. Clay could literally flip a dime off the asphalt into the bucket. He was a former employee of Florida Asphalt and Jax Utilities Management where he was the Supervisor of the Pipe Crews at both locations. Clay enjoyed fishing, riding around on his Polaris side by side with his buddy Jake, and watching old western movies. He had the heart of a lion, and he feared not anything or anyone. He will forever be in our hearts.
Clay was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, William C. Brittain III.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Bennie F. Brittain of Sanderson; children, Kendra Helms (Doug) of Harrison, Ohio, Katrina Hawkins of Watkinsville, Georgia, and Robert “Bobby” J. Brittain (Paula) of Sanderson; stepchildren, Walter W. Huff (Amber) of Jacksonville, Marty Huff (Becca) of Jacksonville, Joe Huff (Angie) of Royston, Georgia, Pam Scheibenreif (Steve) of Hampton, Georgia, and Joanna Cooper of Pearson, Georgia; sister, Bobbie Leedy (Lonnie) of Nashville, Tennessee; along with 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Blackburn-Curry Funeral Chapel with Joe Huff officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
