James Dwayne Merrett, age 58, a lifelong resident of St. George, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, after a brief illness at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Clay. He was born in Jacksonville, on May 17, 1964, to Linda (Sherman) and John Charles Merrett. Dwayne was a big hearted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and best friend who enjoyed being outdoors. Whether at the river on his boat fishing or being outside at the barn, you could find him having a cold one with friends and family telling stories. Dwayne was a hard working man, an over the road truck driver, and proud owner/operator of his Flat Top Peterbilt, “Lucille.” He loved his dog, Molly.
Dwayne was preceded in death by his grandmother, Edith Merrett; brother, Timothy “Bubba” Leighton; niece, Maranda Merrett; and his father, John “Jay” Merrett. Survivors include his beloved wife of 27 years, Ann “Bird” Merrett of St. George, Georgia; stepmother, Holly Merrett of St. George, Georgia; son, James Dylan “Chop” Merrett (Kelsey) of Gainesville; daughters, Kaylen “Kakes” Matthews (Shaun) of Glen St. Mary, Jennifer “Jen” Boykin, Bailey “Beetle” Merrett (Nichole), and Gracie “Goo Goo” Townsend, all of St. George, Georgia; brothers, John “Chuck” Merrett (Tina) of St. George, Georgia and Leroy Sweat of Sanderson; grandchildren, Kale, Reece, Margot, Emersyn; nephew, Hance “Red Bean” Sweat; nieces, Stacey “Hoss” Merrett, Taylor “Tunk” Davis, and Jada “Jada Bug” Leighton.
Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at his home, 105 Sparkman Circle, St. George, Georgia with Reverend Billy Worthington officiating. Visitation with the family will be held an hour prior to the service at the house.
