William Ray Slay, age 83, of Bryceville, Florida, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born to Pearl (Maddox) and William James Slay in Jacksonville, Florida, on January 1, 1941. Mr. Slay lived half his life in Dinsmore and the remaining in Bryceville. He was of Christian faith and loved with all his heart. William was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and always put family first. He was a lifelong carpenter and could build or fix anything. William enjoyed music and singing, especially when working on his tractor. After a long day, he would be found fireside with family and friends. William is preceded in death by his parents; son, Riley Slay; daughter, Shelly Dotson; granddaughter, Ellie Hunt; brothers, Charles "Shorty" Slay and E.W. Slay; and sisters, Delores Smith and Pearl Eby. He is survived by his loving and devoted children, Paul James Slay of Bryceville, Angeline Slay of Bryceville, Martha Hunt (Christopher) of Orange Park, Trisha Ann Pilotta (Nick) of Callahan, Dana Lopez (Johnny) of Callahan, and Willeen Slay of Jacksonville; brother, Sampson Lucas; sisters, Bambi Holman and Delilah Holman; two previous wives, Nina Higginbotham and Catherine Combs; grandchildren, Marissa Madore, Juilanna Campbell, Joseph Price, Levi McGee, Zander Hunt, Dakota Graham, Stella Hunt, Charity Crews, Chasity Crews, Lance Pickett, Destiny Politta, Michael Pilotta, Gauge Hendricks, and Hayden Lopez; and great-grandchildren, Luke Gatlin, Landon Gatlin, Mackenzie Pickett, Dalton Pickett and Riley Pickett. A Celebration of Mr. Slay's Life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Blackburn-Curry Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
