Obituary

Vanis Hodges, age 87, of Glen Saint Mary, Florida, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2026. He was born in Baker County on May 10, 1939, and was a graduate of Baker County High School, Class of 1957.
Vanis served as an Army Medic and then worked at CSX Railroad for 42 years until his retirement. He loved the Lord and being in church and would regularly travel to area revivals and youth camps. Vanis also enjoyed working construction as a side job. He had a true servant’s heart, and his work was his ministry. He volunteered his construction skills for countless churches, families in need, and elders.
Vanis was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Florie Hodges, and both of his sons, David Smith and Steve Hodges. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Hodges; sisters, Evelyn Holland, Roxie Jones, and Joyce Davis; daughter, Chyrli Brinkle; daughter-in-law, Marlene Smith; stepson, Jamie Mitchell (Keri); grandsons, JD Smith (Jessica), Ben Smith (Jennifer), Adam Smith (Amber), and Christopher Mitchell; granddaughters, Ashley Bullard, Cindy Mitchell, and Valerie Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Walker, Jordan, Blake, Scarlett, Willow, Miranda, and Declan; along with many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Macclenny Church of God. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Riverside Memorial Cemetery in Jacksonville.
