Obituary

Helen Dyal Roberts, age 100, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2025. She was born Helen Ruth Dyal in Jacksonville, Florida, on November 17, 1924. Her father, Ellis Van Dyal, grew up on a farm and was one of eight children. He was unable to finish high school, but worked hard to educate himself and qualify for a position on the Jacksonville Police Force, where he began his service in 1929. Her father was killed in the line of duty in 1947. Helen's mother, Myrtle Gertrude Pringle Dyal, was left a widow at the age of 43 and went on to work full time for Diana Clothing Store and manage rental properties that she and her husband owned. Helen was very proud of both her parents for their industrious nature and strong work ethic. Helen graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville in 1942 and briefly attended Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee as a music major before marrying Milton Randall Roberts in 1943. After serving in the Army during WWII, Milton eventually began working as a chemist for St. Regis Paper Company, both in Jacksonville and New York. Helen and Milton had two daughters, Teresa Gail Roberts (b. 1949) and Alisa Anne Roberts (b.1954). The family lived alternately in Florida and in Connecticut as Milton's job assignments took them but in 1962 they finally settled in a home in south Jacksonville. Milton had a major heart attack in 1963 and died in 1969. Like her mother, Helen was left a young widow with family still to raise. Helen went to work full time, mostly in bookkeeping positions. She was a careful manager of her financial affairs and remained in the home she and Milton had bought together until shortly before her death in 2025. Helen was always very proud of her husband and daughters' achievements. She also had two grandchildren, Matthew Carmichael (b. 1982) and Jessica Carmichael (b.1984), and she enjoyed seeing them grow and develop their talents and abilities. Helen was always quick to dismiss her own abilities and talents, but, like her parents and husband, she had a curious mind and strong work ethic. Helen was preceded in death by her older daughter, Teresa Gail, who died March 28, 2025. The two had mostly lived together in recent years and shared a strong love of cats. (They owned a total of five cats together.) She is survived by her younger daughter, Alisa Carmichael; son-in-law, John Carmichael; grandson, Matthew Carmichael; granddaughter, Jessica Horner; grandson-in-law, Adam Horner; and three great-grandchildren, Abram, Ellis, and Hazel Horner. Ellis was named for Helen's father, Ellis Van Dyal. Helen lived a long and, for the most part, a remarkably healthy life. It was only in recent years that her eyesight gradually failed, and she experienced increasing mobility issues. Throughout those physical difficulties, she remained cheerful. Helen is remembered fondly by those who knew her for her sweet and gentle nature. She will be missed. Helen was laid to rest at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville. Arrangements entrusted to the dedicated care of BLACKBURN-CURRY FUNERAL AND CREMATION, 380 N. Lowder Street, Macclenny, Florida 32063. (904) 259-2806.
