David Ray Whitehead, age 65, of Sanderson, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at home surrounded by his family after a long term illness. He was born in Jacksonville on January 18, 1961, one of nine children to Velma (Thrift) and Willie Ray Whitehead.
David grew up in St. Augustine. In his 20s, he made his way to Middleburg for a few years and then landed in Sanderson, where he called home for over 30 years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle who enjoyed hunting and rooting for his Florida Gators and Jacksonville Jaguars. David also loved watching westerns and NASCAR racing. He was a big fan of Dale Jarrett, then later Kevin Harvick.
David was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Randy Usina, John Usina, and Kevin Whitehead. Survivors include his loving wife of 32 years, Melissa “Missy” Whitehead of Sanderson; son, Hunter Ray Whitehead of Sanderson; daughter, Chrystal Michelle Whitehead of Homeland, Georgia; brothers, Ricky Usina (Josephine) of North Carolina, Robbie Usina (Mabel) of Florida, Jerry Whitehead (Maria) of St. Augustine, and Keith Whitehead (Wendy) of St. Augustine; sister, Terry White (Jud) of Jay; grandchildren, Dylan David Joseph Gray, Dalan Ray Joseph Gray, Dalayla Michelle Jean Gray, Levi Ellis Whitehead, and Asher Ray Whitehead; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2:30-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Blackburn-Curry Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Matt Rouse officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Creek Cemetery.
