Mr. Carl Ray Slack, age 87, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2019, at his daughter’s home in Macclenny, surrounded by his devoted family. He was born in Jamestown, New York, on August 17, 1932, to Merton and Evelyn (Gill) Slack. Mr. Slack moved to Florida with his family at the age of 13 and had lived in Jacksonville for 74 years. Carl was a Korean War Veteran who served in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Carl loved sports. He liked watching football and baseball, especially when the Florida Gators and the New York Yankees were playing.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jerri Durham; and beloved son-in-law, Jimbo Fletcher. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Charlotte Johns Slack of Macclenny, FL; son, Ray Alan Slack of Jacksonville, FL; daughter, Cathy Ann Fletcher of Macclenny, FL; sisters, JoAnn Swain (Jack) of Sorrento, FL and Jane Jowers of World Golf Village, FL; grandchildren, James Tyler “Ty” Fletcher and William “Wil” Wiley Fletcher; great-granddaughter, Aubree Ann Fletcher; his best four-legged friend, Molly; along with other family members and friends.
The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at Blackburn-Curry Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Brian Dopson officiating. Interment in Taylor Cemetery will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Carl’s name to the Baker County Veterans Council c/o Commanding Officer, 7460 Juniper Road, Macclenny, FL 32063.
